A Dallas hospital has formally agreed to “take care” of the family of Thomas Eric Duncan.
Attorney Les Weisbrod said during a press conference Wednesday that the settlement with Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital will help to care for Duncan’s four children and his parents, some of which still live in Africa. He would not discuss a dollar amount.
The hospital also wrote a private letter of apology to Duncan’s family, agreed to change policies and produces and will create a charitable trust in Duncan’s memory to help the victims of Ebola in West Africa, Weisbrod said.
Duncan, a Liberian man, died from Ebola on Oct. 8. Before being diagnosed he was sent away from the hospital’s emergency room with antibiotics.
His nephew Josephus Weeks thanked Presbyterian hospital for owning up to its mistakes and making things right for the family and others.
Weeks said he has great respect for the hospital for doing the honorable thing and believes the facility is outstanding. He plans to work with them on the charitable trust and wants to see a state of the art facility for the treatment of Ebola built in Africa.
Weisbrod also commended the hospital for reaching a quick agreement with the family.
But he pointed out that the settlement was likely the best they could do because of a “ridiculously low” cap on medical malpractice laws.
The family is seeking a book or movie deal about their ordeal and wants to raise awareness for what Weisbrod called an “epidemic of preventable medical errors.”
“Preventable errors are not based on race or insurance status. They can happen and do happen,” he said. “Errors happened because of policies and procedures that were not appropriately followed or not appropriately in place.”
Duncan’s fiancée was not included in the settlement.
