Digital shoe shining introduced in Kenya

Imagine a world where shoeshining is digital. Yes, you heard right. No human working on your shoes hurriedly in order to serve the next person in the queue.

Mr Kinyua Gichuhi has done just that. He has introduced digital shoe shiners in the market. Presently, they are in 10 locations in Nairobi, but he hopes to expand to the counties.

Mr Gichuhi has pumped over Sh4 million into the venture, which he relaunched early this year. The entity fizzled out after its initial launch in 2007 due to what he terms “wrong business footing”.

Advertising

This time round, Mr Gichuhi is happy as his hustle is paying off. This is because his business model is marketing and advertising, and not simply shoeshining.

You see, the digital shoe-shiner is a large contraption that accepts Sh10 coins through a slot. The machine, placed strategically on the lower end of the stand, brushes and rolls systematically as you position your shoe.

At the moment, the technology only works for black and brown leather shoes. Suedes can get an ugly smudge of paint on their soft surface.

Mr Gichuhi has convinced several corporate giants to advertise their products on the contraption — digitally — where there will be maximum exposure because shoe polishing takes three minutes per person.

It has taken Mbali Mbali Communications — formally registered in 2010 — innovation to competitively stamp its presence in a cut-throat environment.

“We aim to introduce marketing and communication concepts that are unique. Concepts that leave a lasting impression on the target audience and guarantee a wow effect,” Mr Gichuhi, whose journey to self-employment started in Uganda at Hotel Africana, says.

In 2005, Mr Gichuhi was attending a Marketing Africa event when he chanced upon an “analogue” shoeshine contraption.

The shoeshiner had a mechanism to run advertisements. He found the idea fascinating and decided to bring the business to Kenya.

In November 2007, after saving for it, Mr Gichuhi imported the machine and partnered with a colleague to run posters to be used on the contraption.

Hitches

“Challenges set in, like how to operate the machine, loading ads, the right operating conditions, and on and on. It was a headache,” he adds.

He got some advertisers on board, but things started going wrong as the posters would sometimes get stuck when the machine broke down.

He imported other machines and secured operating sites at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre, 680 Hotel, Galleria Mall, K1 Klubhouse, and Green House Mall. However, the glitches continued, affecting his advertisers’ confidence.

“When payments are due, it becomes a challenge to convince them to pay when they are pretty sure that their ad did not run as promised,” he notes.

After two years, Mr Gichuhi closed shop and went back to the drawing board. He asked himself what he had done wrong, what he could do to run an effective firm, and how he could regain clients’ trust. He had many sleepless nights over such questions.

Digital shoe box

He did some research and found a digital shoe box where advertisements could run from a laptop. It cost Sh340,000.

He teamed up with a friend who is experienced in digital advertising, then installed the relevant software in order to post the adverts via the internet.

“This reduced our operation costs as we no longer printed the posters that had to be physically added or removed to the spindle,” said Mr Gichuhi.

Kiambu Senator Wamatangi fired me after raping me, says former househelp

I will never forget July 8, 2006. It was my third day at work as a househelp in the Wamatangi household. I can recall the exact time, 1.30pm, because I wanted to watch a programme on television. My boss Wamatangi came home and found his wife with me in the sitting room.

He started quarrelling her, demanding to know why she didn’t go to work. I quickly stepped out of the sitting room and went to the kitchen. I could hear them quarrel in English. I could gather that mzee was not happy. After five minutes, madam left for work, and I was left in the house with Wamatangi.

He then summoned me into the living room and asked me to bring him tea.

He asked me to sit down and chat. I politely refused and told him I prefer black tea since I didn’t like milk. That was the moment he pulled me next to him and pushed me onto the sofa.

I started screaming and he slapped me on the face. He then used his hand to cover my mouth. I think my screams must have attracted the neighbour next door because I heard someone knock on the door, but they soon left.

He forcefully removed my panty and forced himself on me. I cried bitterly. I had never had sex. I was a virgin. I was saved and a staunch church member.

I don’t know how long it lasted, but I just lay there, in pain, and too shocked to move.

When he finished, he dragged me to my feet and ordered me to wash myself. I showered as he stood by the door, looking at me, only wearing his shirt and socks.

He warned me not to reveal what happened to anybody. He said he would call the police and tell them to lock me up if I dared.

How was I to know that one should never shower after a rape ordeal? I dropped out of school in class eight for lack of school fees. My father died when I was very young, and my mother is a peasant farmer.

Wamatangi is a millionaire, the richest man in my village, and has connections with ‘big’ people. I was too scared.

Too scared to talk

I took my shame, and hid in the bedroom where I stayed until madam came in the evening. I didn’t tell madam since mzee was also around, and I was afraid of him.

The next day, I went and told our neighbour, who invited madam and told her. Madam was not shocked. She told me there was nothing she could do, and that her hands were ‘tied’. The neighbour convinced madam to tell mzee to take me to hospital ‘ili nisafishwe.’

It took madam three days to gather courage to ask her husband to take me to hospital. He agreed but when we reached Nairobi Women’s Hospital gate, he told us to get out of his car and threw Sh1,200 on the ground, warning me to never step in his house again. He fired me right outside the hospital gate and sped off. After one week, my greatest fear was confirmed. I had missed my periods.

On April 23, 2007, I gave birth to a baby girl at Nazareth Hospital. It was when the baby was two months old, that Wamatangi came to see his daughter.

He gave me Sh7,000. He never came to see the child again, or offer any financial support. I went to the children’s office at Nyayo House where they wrote a letter to him.  After two weeks, I went back. The gentleman at the children’s welfare office in Nyayo House told me they could not help me. I didn’t lose hope and mid July 2007, I went to Fida (Federation of Women Lawyers – Kenya). They wrote a letter, which was delivered to Wamatangi.

In August, I went back to Fida and the director (she died a few weeks back after thugs attacked her and raped her two daughters) told me pointblank that she could do nothing. She then took my papers and tore them into pieces. She told me, “Lazima uongee mzuri na mzee. Hakuna kitu unaweza mfanyia (You have to be polite with the old man. You can do nothing to him).”

Towards the end of 2007, Wamatangi was running for a parliamentary seat. He came home to my mother, and gave her Sh20,000 promising to cater for his daughter’s upkeep.

But he lost the elections.

Allowed me in his bazaar

He again went silent and in May 2008, I decided to visit his office near Nyayo Stadium where he has a car bazaar. He kept me waiting the whole day then around 3pm, called me to the conference room.

He summoned all his employees and warned them to never allow me near his office.

He threatened to fire anyone who allowed me to his bazaar. He hurled abuses at me as his employees watched. I started crying and he dragged me out and threw me out the gate. I was carrying my daughter who was also crying. One employee was touched and gave me bus fare.

He doesn’t pick my calls. He doesn’t reply to my texts. His daughter is seven years old and he only saw her when she was two months, and ten months. In total, the amount of money he has sent on M-Pesa for his daughter’s upkeep is Sh70,000.

In seven years, only Sh70,000, yet I was not even his girlfriend. He raped me. I was ignorant of the law, and I am from a poor family.

He knows there is nothing I can do.

A top politician whose alleged scandal was exposed in the current issue of The Nairobian (May 16-22), 2014 has not taken the matter lightly. (Read: Kiambu senator Wamatangi fired me after raping me, says former househelp)

According to The Nairobian news vendors in Nairobi, the outraged lawmaker has given instructions to some unknown people to ensure that the paper is “out of circulation by close of business.”

“There is a vehicle buying the current issue of The Nairobian off the streets and the people in the car have told vendors to deliver more copies at Nyayo Stadium,” a vendor said.

According to witnesses, the SUV (pictured below) was driven out of town by traffic police in the early hours of Friday May 16 morning.

“They were spotted buying copies of The Nairobian in large quantities within the CBD and along Kiambu Road. Later on, we saw them burning the papers near a railway line in upper hill,” a source said.

Oscar winner Lupita Nyong’o and boyfriend K’naan may have initially been shy about taking their relationship public, but the world seems to have caught up with them.

The two, both of whom have Africa roots were most recently spotted out at a fun filled romantic dinner in Brooklyn last week where they dined and fearlessly share romantic moments while at it.

The Oscar award winner and 12 Years a Slave actress, 31, and the Somali-born rapper, 36, hit up Italian eatery Dino, a cozy restaurant in Brooklyn’s where they dined on soup (his) and salad (hers), while sipping specialty cocktails from the bar.

“They looked very much in love and not afraid to show it,” an onlooker told Us Weekly of the couple, noting that the two kissed and held hands throughout dinner.

The Kenya-raised actress had been secretly dating K’naan, the “Wavin’ Flag” singer, who has two sons with ex-wife Deqa Warsame, since September 2013 and this came to light soon after she scooped the award and they were occasionally spotted together.

“They’re both passionate about African issues thus make for a perfect match.” A pal to the couple reported

Ngilu orders girl raped by mother’s boyfriend taken to KNH, Kalonzo to sponsor her

After three years of struggling with the pain of being violated by a man who was supposed to protect her, a 15-year-old girl from Kaloo village in Mwingi Central has found a guardian angel to not only comfort, but help her get treatment. Lands Cabinet secretary Charity Ngilu responded to the plight of the minor who was defiled and left paralysed by her mother’s lover in 2012 while she was 12 after it was highlighted by the media. (Read: Why do this to me? Kenyan girl asks mother who eloped with lover who raped her)

The girl, who was in Class Three by then, was forced to drop out of school and her cherished dreams of being a policewoman shattered by the ordeal. Since being robbed of her innocence, she has never received proper treatment and the burden of nursing her fell on the frail shoulders of her old and poor grandmother, who tried to take her to the Embu District Hospital, but has failed to raise the money for the trip and treatment. Helpless and frustrated, the granny has been using painkillers—the only medication she could afford—to ease the minor’s pain.

The girl’s mother, who residents claim is mentally unstable, is said to have taken refuge with her lover in Garrisa to enjoy the bliss of ‘love’, unbuffered by her daughter’s anguish. She seems not bothered by the pain her lover had caused on her daughter. Though area chief Sam Maithya had taken the case to the Mwingi court, the minor’s mother is alleged to have burned the hospital documents they were given at Embu to destroy the evidence.

After the story was high- lighted in media on Mothers Day Sunday, Ngilu was so touched by the story that she sent her personal assistant, Mary Ndunga, to pick the minor from Mwingi and taken to the Kenyatta National Hospital. With the help of the Kenya Red Cross, Ngilu’s PA helped the girl from her remote village to Nairobi. Wiper party leader Kalonzo Musyoka, who was present at the Red Cross office in Mwingi while the minor was being dressed, condemned the act and urged police to arrest the man who defiled her.

Musyoka promised that the girl will be sponsored by the Kalonzo Musyoka Foundation to continue with her education after treatment. “I am concerned that this happened at our place. Immediately the girl gets well, she will be sponsored by my foundation to continue with her education,” he said. Kalonzo accused the minor’s mother of child negligence, saying she should be charged.

‘Secret Affair’ Haunts World Record Holder, David Rudisha

$

Olympic and world record holder in the 800 metres David Rudisha is facing probably the most critical times of his career.

Rudisha missed the first leg of the 2014 Diamond League series in Doha, Qatar on May 9 because of a foot injury. He has been off track for almost a year due to a knee injury he suffered in New York last year June.

Long period of inactivity has affected the career of the legendary athlete who is considered the most outstanding athlete together with Jamaican sprinter Hussein Bolt. Rudisha and Bolt stunned the world when they won the most spectacular gold medals-within minutes-of the London 2012 Games.

There have, however, been rumours that Rudisha’s injuries are linked to a domestic dispute with his wife of four years, Elizabeth Naanyu. Sources have told The Nairobian that possible domestic fights between Rudisha and Naanyu may have caused him to keep off track since last year June.

There have been further claims that the middle-distance runner has been having an affair with the niece of his long time pacesetter, Sammy Tangui.

Sources told The Nairobian that Samantha Tangui, who is in her mid or late 20s, has been involved in a secret affair with Rudisha for three years now. The sources in Eldoret, where Samantha lives, said Naanyu is aware and has severally clashed with her husband over his mistress.

Rudisha and Naanyu got married in Kilgoris in 2010 in a Maasai wedding ceremony, soon after he was crowned IAAF World Athlete of the Year.

When The Nairobian contacted Rudisha, he simply laughed off the allegations. He denied that the alleged fights with Naanyu have caused injuries, which have affected his career.

“My injuries are genuine from the sport and hard training, I even underwent a keyhole surgery after an ultra-sound scan which revealed that I had an injury deep in the middle of my knee, not that I was hurt in a domestic altercation,” Rudisha said.

The athlete said he developed the injury while taking part in a race in New York. Rudisha said he is recovering well and is set to make a comeback at races planned for Oregon in the US.

He, however, did not deny or confirm knowing Samantha.

Naanyu told The Nairobian that allegations about her husband’s infidelity are not true.

“When did you hear those rumours? They are falsehoods meant to tarnish his name because of his stature. How long has this rumour been doing the rounds?” she posed.

However, Rudisha’s pacesetter Tangui admitted he was aware of claims that his partner on track has a secret affair.

“Yes, Samantha is my niece and there have been some rumours that link my track mate with her; but I am in no position to confirm any of this,” he said. “I’m always with Rudisha and if he is keeping the said affair secret, then I can’t tell.”

An incident reported by our sources in Eldoret, that is Rudisha’s training town and Kilgoris, his home seems to support these claims.

A source claimed that Naanyu and her friends had confronted Samantha on Kimalel Street in Eldoret as she was walking into a supermarket.

According to the source, Naanyu and the street vendors “almost beat Samantha up” before she was rescued by an unknown motorist driving a top-of the-range carallegedly belonging to the athlete.

“That was really a stunt. It left Lizzie (Elizabeth, Rudisha’s wife) and her gang of women with nothing else to do other than shout unprintable as the vehicle was being driven away from the scene,” the source said.

The witness further alleged that Rudisha’s recent injuries may have been caused by domestic fights over ‘the other woman.’

When The Nairobian called Samantha on her mobile phone, she went on the defensive and hanged up twice.

A text message sent to her for her confirmation or denial was never replied.

She later replied: “I don’t even know him, but how is that your business anyway? Kindly stop bothering me.”

Another source told The Nairobian that Rudisha and Samantha met through his close association with her uncle.

“How else do you explain the two meeting? It is only through the girl’s uncle that they hooked up and the relationship started,” she said.

She said Rudisha and Samantha’s relationship has been kept a secret by Rudisha’s close friends who have known about their closeness for three years.

A different source said the two are indeed close and have travelled to differentlocations together.

“Yes, I know Samantha through my brother and she is also a relative of Tangui, the athlete; but what I am quite sure of is that she is Rudisha’s ‘clande’ (secret lover),” she said..

The source claimed Rudisha has built a house for her in Eldoret and bought her a car.

Who is after Raila Odinga’s life?

$

0

Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga,  now on a sabbatical in the US, was forced to travel by a chartered flight instead of the commercial one he had initially been booked on following a tip off that unknown people were monitoring his movements.

His departure had to be rescheduled for ‘security reasons’ opting for a French airline instead of the British Airways he had initially been booked on.

In addition, the former PM flew out of the country three days earlier than he had been scheduled on the night of March 9 en-route to the US, where he has been for the past three months giving lectures on African politics and key note speeches on democracy at the invitation of the African Presidential Centre at Boston University.

Last minute

Raila’s official diary keeper, Silas Jakakimba would neither deny nor confirm that the former PM switched flights and rescheduled his departure to shake off whoever might have been keeping tabs on his schedule. However, the long-time aide leaves no doubt there was a last minute tinkering with his boss’ itinerary over security reasons he would not reveal.

He says: “Odinga pays equal respect to and has confidence in all local and international airlines that operate to and from JKIA. What is important to note is that he left JKIA for the US in early March 2014 according to script and just as had been planned well in advance. Imperatively, and due to security reasons on the one hand and others not for disclosure, I would say it would be most prudent to leave the matter to rest at that without going to finer details of itineraries and attendant flight numbers.”

The revelations come barely a week after Raila’s elder brother, Dr Oburu Oginga, sensationally alleged a plot by some East African leaders to assassinate his brother for allegedly being an impediment to economic lift-off the five-member regional bloc.

Raila has been seen as a darling of the West while East African Community (EAC) governments have inclined economically toward China in the East, to the chagrin of the former bloc.

Dr Oburu later told The Standard on Saturday that the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) had “credible intelligence” that some leaders from the EAC were uncomfortable with Raila’s long sabbatical in the US.

According to Oburu, perceptions of filial relationship with US President Barack Obama, whose father was Luo, have also worked against his brother.  Asked to qualify his allegations, the nominated MP said some regional leaders fear Raila’s relations with the US had the potential to destabilise East Africa.

Contacted by email, upon request,  embassies of accused countries dismissed the allegations.  A senior officer at one of the embassies, who identified himself as Emmanuel said his government would investigate the allegations.

“Sometimes it is not necessary to respond to these allegation,” he said.

Another High Commissioner, in an email response, termed the allegations as baseless.

“Those are imaginary and manufactured rumors that should deserve little attention,” said the statement.

The Criminal Investigations Department (CID) on Wednesday declined to take a statement from Dr Oburu, sparking complaints in ODM that the state either wanted to belittle Raila by directing the MP to give the information to junior officers at county or does not want to leave a trail that would later prove the allegations.

This is not the first time allegations of a plot to kill Raila have been made.

Past instances

In April 2012, Raila’s first cousin and Gem MP Jakoyo Midiwo sensationally alleged a plot had been hatched by a minister in the Kibaki administration to assassinate Raila ahead of the 2013 polls.

Oburu says he had learnt of the plot during the recent state visit by Chinese Prime Minister Li Keqiang. However, he would not divulge the source of the information, but he justified his decision to go public citing past instances when the likes of Tom Mboya, JM Kariuki and Robert of Ouko who had information on threats to their lives but chose to keep quiet.

“I was informed by people present when the Chinese leader was at State House that an EAC leader wanted Raila not to be allowed back in the country when his tour of the US ends. He was agitated when he was here to attend the signing of the agreement with the China for the construction of the standard gauge railway. He was overheard uttering: ‘Hakuna haja ya kuona yeye katika hii dunia’ (There is no need for him to be alive again),” Dr Oburu.

Contacted about threats to his security, Raila would not comment on his brother’s allegations, but Jakakimba told The Standard on Saturday the former PM heard of the assassination plot for the first time when his elder brother spoke about it.

Significantly, Raila has not disowned his brother statements that have elicited furious responses from state functionaries.Raila has had frosty relations with some EAC leaders.

In the wake of the 2007-08 post-elections, President Museveni rushed to Nairobi in a botched attempt to reconcile Raila and Mwai Kibaki, who had been controversially declared winner of the polls. When Raila rejected Museveni as mediator, the latter would later deride the former’s community as “mad jaluo” who had reacted to electoral dispute by uprooting a section of the railway in Kibera.

‘Mutual suspicion’

The railway is a major arterial transport link between the port of Mombasa and Uganda.

Against this backdrop, Raila has had a longstanding ‘mutual suspicion’ and aversion for Museveni and lately Rwanda’s Paul Kagame, whom he frequently chides as impediments to democracy in Africa.

The US has been critical of Uganda involvement in the South Sudan conflict that pits President Salva Kiir against his former deputy Dr Riek Machar.

Museveni is alleged to have taken sides in the civil war after he deployed troops to support Kiir, relegating to the periphery room for impartiality by the Inter-Governmental Authority on Development chaired by President Uhuru Kenyatta.

Political activist Moses Kuria’s Thursday said his Facebook account had been shut down, days after he was grilled over alleged social media hate speech

Mr Kuria announced the shutdown through his Twitter account ‘They have shut down my Facebook account. They can do that but they will not shut down my resolve. I will be back!’

Speaking to nation.co.ke on phone, Mr Kuria said his account started giving him an error message shortly after he had posted about him and Waititu inspecting the KICC grounds for a Jubilee rally.

“At about 11.30pm, I tried logging in and the response was that ‘your account has been disabled by administrator’,” he added.

Mr Kuria had posted ‘Tomorrow Hon F Waititu and I will inspect KICC COMESA grounds at 11.30 am. This will be the venue of the Jubilee Rally on Saturday,’ when his account was pulled down.

The activist appeared before the National Cohesion and Integration Commission over postings on his Facebook account deemed as hate speech.

Mr Kuria said some followers on twitter were already threatening him telling him they would have his twitter account suspended too.

“Social media power is huge and that explains why they are targeting vocal users like me as it seems I am an impediment to any activities against the Jubilee administration,” he added.

The activist who will be part of a delegation to China next week hopes to obtain lessons on how to build a prosperous economy without twitter and Facebook.

“I hope to gather some information on how countries like China survive without twitter and Facebook while on my tour there,” he added.

Mr Kuria has been vocal online prompting the NCIC to summon him after the Law Society of Kenya recommended to the Director of Prosecution that he be investigated for a post he wrote last week.

Thousands travel to city for Raila homecoming rally

Scores of buses have been hired to ferry Cord supporters to Nairobi to welcome home their leader and former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.

Mr Odinga, who has been in the US on a lecture tour that has lasted nearly three months will address a rally at Uhuru Park Saturday after he lands in the city.

Many of the supporters are travelling from the opposition coalition’s strongholds at the coast and in western Kenya.

Thursday, the organising committee was putting final touches to the preparations for the rally that received a go-ahead from the police on Wednesday after top level intervention that reversed a ban by Inspector-General of Police David Kimaiyo.

Cord leaders Farah Maalim, Jakoyo Midiwo, James Orengo and Junet Mohamed were upbeat, saying, they were expecting a big turnout at Uhuru Park.

Mr Odinga, who flew from the US on Wednesday morning, arrived in Dubai Thursday and is expected at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport at 1pm Saturday.

“We have put everything in place to ensure a successful event. We have secured the venue at Uhuru Park and we are expecting not less than one million people to attend,” Mr Maalim, who is the organising committee chairman, said.

Mr Odinga’s spokesman Dennis Onyango said the Cord leader will address an international press conference at JKIA before driving to Uhuru Park.

PEACE WILL PREVAIL

Mr Maalim, Mr Midiwo and Mr Mohamed urged the police to provide security for the thousands of supporters expected at the rally as they promised that peace will prevail at the event.

“We expect a peaceful rally. The State must keep us secure because it is its duty to provide security,” Mr Midiwo, the Cord chief whip in the National Assembly, said, adding, “We want to tell Baba (Mr Odinga) all the ills that have happened while he was away.”

Mr Mohamed said they will neither engage in hate speech nor ethnic slaying and invited members of the Jubilee coalition to the rally which, he said, will address issues facing Kenyans.

“It will be a mammoth rally, which will address itself to issues that matter. All are welcome, including our brothers and sisters in Jubilee,” he said.

The coalition was spending modestly on the rally, he said, adding that no money is being spent to buy crowds as there was none.

“We only have Sh250,000 to spend on this event. This money has been raised through donations by our members. We have borrowed a public address system from one of our members and the rest will go into logistics” he said.

Uncertainty clouded the rally on Tuesday after Mr Kimaiyo banned all weekend public gatheringsin Nairobi, citing insecurity based on intelligence reports. But the ban was reversed on Wednesday morning, reportedly on the intervention of State House.

SHORTAGE OF BUSES

In Kisumu Thursday, hundreds of Mr Odinga’s supporters hired buses to ferry them to the rally. Kisumu Central MP Ken Obura said politicians from the region had hired the buses.

“We are doing our best to ensure that Kisumu residents are well represented in the rally to be addressed by our party leader,” he said as he refused to disclose the number of buses that were hired. Some supporters complained that there might be a shortage of buses.

Taxi operators and bus managers said they had been receiving a number of group bookings since Monday.

“We have increased our transport charges from Sh800 to Sh1,200 because the number of passengers travelling to Nairobi has doubled,” Kisumu matatu operator Michael Munyendo said.

‘‘We can’t deny that we are cashing in to earn more money,” he said.

In the North Rift, ODM and Ford Kenya parties also hired buses while other supporters will use private means to travel to Nairobi.

“Almost all delegates and majority of Cord supporters are expected to attend the meeting in large numbers,” Uasin Gishu ODM secretary Charles Tanui said.

ODM officials from Uasin Gishu and Elgeyo Marakwet counties Thursday met at an Eldoret hotel to finalise travel arrangements.

Similar arrangements took place in Nandi, West Pokot, Bungoma counties. Some of the supporters left for the city rally two days ago.

In Trans Nzoia, Ford Kenya chairman Ferdinand Wanyonyi said they will ferry their supporters to the rally.

Security will be tight at the venue, with more than 1,000 police officers stationed in Uhuru Park.

They will be drawn from the Kenya Police Service, the Administration Police, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations, the Traffic Department and the National Intelligence Service.

Police sniffer dogs and horses will also be used.

Security officers will start clearing the venue Friday, hours before the function. All the persons attending the rally will be screened before being allowed into the venue.

Nairobi deputy county police commander Moses Ombati said that all vehicles will be parked at a designated area after being searched.

Kisumu Polytechnic closed indefinitely after students strike over disco ban

Kisumu, Kenya: Kisumu Polytechnic has been closed indefinitely after students went on rampage over disco. The students were protesting against the administration’s decision to ban disco within the institution’s compound for security reasons.

Institution’s principal Joyce Nyanjom said a special board resolved to send the students home for fear that they would cause destruction. “We are just taking precussion because we don’t know what may develop from the little misunderstanding but we hope we will call the students back soon,” said Nyanjom.

Ms Nyanjom said the students were incited by their leaders who misreported to them that the administration had scraped off the entire culture day.

According to Nyanjom, a board meeting held last year reached the decision to ban disco for security purposes.
She said the hosting of disco within the institution has always been taken advantage of by thugs from the town who posed security danger to the students.

According to the student’s organization’s Finance Controller Shem Mauti, the students were infuriated by the management’s proposal to scrap off disco during the institution’s cultural day scheduled for next week.

Mauti said the students’ budget had not factored in hiring another venue and the principal became rigid when they proposed to have the management to redo the budget. “We had a meeting with the principal and it is the response from her which we communicated to the students and it seems that is what infuriated them,” said Mauti.

The students then matched out of the compound and started stoning motorists prompting the management to call the police.

Police said the students then invaded the neighbouring Makasembo and Polyview Estates where fight broke between them and members of the public.

[VIDEO] Kenyan Ambassador to US defends Embassy conduct, talks Diaspora issues in Dallas

Kenya’s ambassador to the US has dismissed allegations that embassy staff in Washington DC were inefficient, rude and unprofessional.

Ms Jean Kamau was responding to reports in the Kenyan media that the embassy ignored calls.

There have also been concerns on under- staffing and inadequate resources to cater for Kenyans in the US.

Ms Kamau, who spoke to the Nation in Dallas, denied the reports. She said Kenyans were treated well whether living in the diaspora or as visitors who wanted to travel to our motherland.

The envoy said the embassy staff were equipped to process the large number of applications and queries they received.

She said there was a channel to direct complaints on their website.

Ms Kamau asked Kenyans to lodge formal complaints with the embassy “so that there is proper follow-up on any issues they may encounter.”

She said that the embassy would respond to all the grievances.

“To make blanket complaints in the media is very unfair because you are not giving us a chance to address your concerns and also rectify ourselves,” she said.

Ambassador Kamau also announced the setting up of two honorary consuls in the US cities of Dallas in Texas and Boston, Massachusetts.

The two cities have a large population of Kenyans and have over the years been lobbying for consulates in these cities.

She said the honorary consuls are a first step to establishing consulates in this city and that the embassy will monitor the response to these consuls before moving to the next step.

The envoy also moved to calm fears that Kenyans in the US may not be able to vote using the second generation ID’s and may have to obtain a third generation ID in order to be eligible to vote in the 2017 polls.

Embassy staff were in Dallas over last weekend to issue the IDs.

She said that the second generation ID is a valid ID for purposes of registration of Kenyan citizens and that the fact that the government has captured applicants’ data when applying for the second generation ID, will make it easier for the government to use the same data and re-issue a third generation ID with ease without having to repeat the process of applying for a new card.

The ambassador met with Kenyan groups in Dallas which include the Kenya Diaspora Advisory Council and an East Africa group, the East Africa Chamber of Commerce.

On Wednesday evening, she also met with Dallas business leaders at the World Affairs Council forum. She assured American businesses that Kenya is taking measure in curbing the rising insecurity and maintained that Kenya remained a safe country for their investments.

She also pitched Kenya’s achievement in improving infrastructure and the discovery of oil in the country.

On Monday, she also met with the Queen’s night US international group, a group of women organizing themselves around the country to empower women.

The ministry has been able to establish chapters in Seattle, Boston, Houston Texas, Dallas Texas, Delaware, Lancaster PA, Minnesota, Oklahoma, Columbus Ohio, Connecticut, Kansas, and Baltimore Maryland. Upcoming chapters include Chicago, Michigan, Indiana and California.

Kenyan man on trial for defiling a child attempts to rape a woman in court

A suspect surprised a city court after he tried to rape a woman sitting next to him.

The suspect was in court for allegedly defiling a child in April. Simon Ngozi 21, allegedly wrestled an elderly woman who was sitting next to him to the ground, attempting to rape her inside Makadara Law Courts.

It took the intervention of a group of prisons officers and the public to restrain Ngozi.

The court proceedings were halted for a while as the officers whisked Ngozi to the cells.

“I was seated next to him, at first, he touched my handbag, and I moved it away from him thinking he was a thief. He shamelessly moved his hand around my abdomen before lifting my dress, and pushing me to the floor,” the woman told officers outside the court.

According to court records seen by The Nairobian, Ngozi was arrested in April and charged in the same court for allegedly defiling a nine-year-old girl in Umoja Estate.

Ngozi’s sister who was in court, pleaded with the woman to forgive his brother. She claimed her brother was in such circumstances after his girlfriend left him following the defilement charge.

Drama ensued in Umoja Estate, Nairobi as Police sought to arrest controversial Pastor Victor Kanyari.

The pastor, husband to renowned gospel singer Betty Bayo, was wanted by the police on allegations of child neglect of his biological child leading to his death. It is believed that the Salvation Church Ministries’ pastor had sired the one year old child with one of his church members. The pastor had gone to collect the body of the boy, when an angry mob descended on him baying for his blood.

The baby boy suffocated to death after a fire broke out in a small bedsitter, the pastor is said to have rented for his girlfriend. Residents were angered by the poor conditions the multimillionaire pastor had provided for his son and they had to be dispersed with gun shots by police firing in the air.

It is not the first time that the pastor has been embroiled in controversy as late last year, a story on NTV exposed him as a fake prophet out to swindle believers of their hard earned cash.
