Father of Garissa attack victim pens emotional tribute

A heartbroken father of one of the 148 victims of Garissa University terrorist attack has penned a moving tribute to his late son, laying bare the pain and agony of the relatives of the deceased.

Headlined, My Son Cyrus Mutuku, the father delves into the son’s character calling him “light at the end of the tunnel” and “a big source of light that lit the whole family tunnel from the entrance to the end (exit)”.

“It is unbelievable! I don’t believe it! Your mother doesn’t believe it! Neither your family nor the entire community,” reads the tribute in part.

He then blames security apparatus for failing in their mandate.

“We shall be forced to believe that you succumbed to injustice, insecurity, terrorism, blatant ignorance by certain responsible organs working irresponsibly,” he writes in the tribute shared online by Ushahidi co-founder Ory Okolloh Mwangi.

PAINFUL DEATH

He says Mutuku wanted to redeem the family and the community from elements of poor living, injustice and selfish desires.

“My son I know you died a painful death and I know your blood shall avenge your death. May the souls that contemplated your death burn in the hottest part of hell. May your killers never live  to stage any other terrorist attack,” the father writes.

Mutuku was among 142 students who were mercilessly felled by terrorists’ bullets on the morning of April 2, 2015 at the Garissa University.

He then makes a prayer:

“Thus what happens on earth has to have the manifestation of his will. Therefore, may the lord NEVER allow the progression of such terrorists’ activities from achieving. Never see the light of day.”

CORD to sue government over construction of security wall

The Coalition for Reforms and Democracy (CORD) has threatened to sue the government over the construction of a security wall along the Kenya-Somalia border and threats to close the Daadab Refugee Camp. (Read: Kenyan starts construction of a 680 kilometer long wall along Somalia border.)

CORD Senators Moses Wetangula of Bungoma, James Orengo of Siaya and Hassan Omar of Mombasa said that they will have no option than to move to court should the government fail to rescind its decisions.

CORD argues that the move by the government is unconstitutional and will not resolve the security crisis.

“The Jubilee government has been busy making roadside declarations from everywhere. We are reminding them that this is not the solution to insecurity,” said Wetangula.

Wall a result of corruption

The CORD team accused the government of failing to address the insecurity challenge saying that the construction of the security wall is just a waste of public funds.

The team further alleged that the security wall construction is a result of corruption in the government.

They further accused the government of being insensitive to the refugees by threatening to shut down the Daadab refugee Camp.

CORD pointed out that the closure of the camp will have far-reaching consequences on Kenya’s future and relationship with other nations.

It further called on the government to work with the relevant agencies like the United Nations High Commission on Refugees (UNHCR) to screen the refugees.

To My “Diaspora” Son: My Wishes For You

“Come for your visa at 3pm”.

I  heard the magical words that very few people got to hear that day.

I had received a five year student visa to get a Bachelors’ of Engineering at an American University. I would be leaving the country in three weeks.

The next 2 weeks were very busy at home. Everyone wanted to wish me well and say goodbye. Being granted a visa to the USA had elevated me to some sort of celebrity status in our neighborhood.

My dad told me he wanted to have a talk with me. I sort of ignored him at first; but his constant insistent was annoying, so I decided to grant him the time.

The two of us sat in my his study. My mum brought us a thermos of hot tea and some marie biscuits’ for the hero of the day (me). My dad did not have my biscuits. Mum slowly poured the hot liquid into two cups, as if she wanted to be part of our conversation but my father kindly sent her away.

“Mwangi, I want to talk to you before you leave the country.”

“I’m happy you will get an opportunity to pursue your dream of becoming an engineer. But at the same time, there’s just so much you do not see in the journey ahead of you. I think my duty as a parent will not be done, if I do not prepare you as best as I can for your journey.”

“I have been there when many of our neighbors have said goodbye to their children. One thing I’ve learnt is that what they think the journey abroad will be, is normally not. Joseph of Baba Wanjau came back a drug addict and just last year, Mama Shiru died and Shiru could not come for her funeral.”

“The first thing we both have to realize is we do not know how often we will get to see you before I pass away.”

“Don’t say that Dad,” Mwangi interjected.

But his father continued.

“I want you to become a success at the end of your Diaspora journey. Now being a success does not automatically mean you buying an expensive car (ile Range Lover munapenda).Buying an expensive car just to stay for several hours in  Nairobi traffic is clearly not a mark of success for anyone. We have our values all messed up in our country today.”

“Here is my definition of success for you son. Try to do at least all the things on this list and things will be good for you.”

  • First, take care of your money. I want you to live well below your means and continue the saving culture we have instilled in you. Send a little amount of money to your bank account here. You may need this for a rainy day. If you save a significant amount, you can buy a piece of land and build some rental apartments. The population in Kenya is growing at a high, steady rate and people will need shelter.

“What if I do not intend on settling back home Dad?”

“Well, you can still access this money from anywhere so you can use it to buy a home where you will choose to live. Either way, saving a little something will serve you well.”

  • I want you to have a personal encounter with Jesus and become a friend of God. He will be a constant friend when you have no friends.
  • Do whatever you can to complete your education and do well in school.
  • Communicate with your mum and I constantly.
  • We first talked about your money. Although it is important that you become financially successful , I want you to remember that this does not stop with you. Remember there is a lot of need in this country. I want you to go beyond yourself and be aware that you have the ability to change many people’s lives. I want you to understand that the person who gives more gets even more. Whenever you come to visit home please volunteer your time and help out at charities like Homeless of Nairobi and Joseph Wanjau’s disabled kids.
  • Remember if you ever come back home, be an agent of change, there are still so many things wrong in our great country and you can be that change. There is extreme lack on one hand and excess on the other hand and this is not normal. So I’m not trying to suggest you have excess but I want u to realize God gives you wealth so you can share it with others. It’s not just about you son. I want you to make a big difference in Kenya. Be like Susan Kiragu who did her PhD and came back home to help children from poor backgrounds get an education.
  • Finally, if you will become alcoholic abroad then you might as well stay and do that here so we can visit you at the rehab down the street. “Now go and see if your mothers chapatis are ready.”

Kenyan owned business named 2015 Massachusetts Minority-Owned Small Business of the Year

A Kenyan owned business in Massachusetts has been named the winner of the 2015 Massachusetts Minority-Owned Small Business of the Year award.

In an announcement made by the Massachusetts SBA District Director Robert Nelson, the business, Ace Medical Services owned by Michael Chege and Raphael Bibiu was commended for their hard work and dedication.

“I am very honored that the SBA will recognize Michael and Raphael with this significant award” said Robert Nelson.   “Their hard work and dedication truly is exemplary and all of us at the SBA applaud the Ace Medical team and leadership for never giving up and for the impacts they have made in the community they serve.  The accomplishments are outstanding!”

Michael Chege and Raphael Bibiu are perfect examples of the American Dream. Both immigrated to the United States from Kenya with all their belongings in one suitcase. They worked as CNAs (certified nursing assistant) in the health care industry while going back to college to improve themselves and gain experience. In 2007, they decided to start their own Home Health Care Company to do God’s work – providing medical and home services to the elderly, sick and underserved minority groups.

Starting out in a small one room office at the Martin Luther King Empowerment Center in Worcester, they developed their vision and mission for the company – often wrestling with doubtthinking about giving up and declaring bankruptcy. In July of 2009, the team started utilizing free counseling services from Massachusetts Small Business Development Center (MSBDC) at Clark University, who assisted them in putting together and implementing a sound business plan to generate growth.  Later that year after repeatedly being turned down by multiple banks, help in the form of a $150,000 SBA 7A loan was approved by Commerce Bank.  This infusion of capital helped the young startup company persevere through a phase when total revenue was approximately $500,000 with a net income of $53,000.  Today, Ace Medical Services is a $3.6 million company that employs 120 people in the area.

The Minority-Owned Small Business of the Year award is presented annually to a growing business, with three years of success in sales and profits, increased jobs, an innovative product, and demonstrated potential.

The company was nominated for this award by John Rainey, Regional Director with Massachusetts Small Business Development Center, Central Regional Office.

Michael Chege and Raphael Bibiu will be honored at an SBA awards lunch along with the other 2015 Massachusetts Small Business Week winners at the Sheraton Framingham on May 4, 2015.

About SBA National Small Business Week:

Man with an estimated Sh500 million empire changing Akorino’s view of money

Obadiah Maina, 38, is the sect’s adherent, but refuses to believe that God bars him from accumulating wealth here on earth. From being a lecturer to a potato seller, Maina has built an empire estimated to be worth Sh500 million

By James Murimi @Jamesmurymy

Donned in a white turban and a black suit, Obadiah Maina majestically alights from his Toyota V8, wearing a big smile. The reason, he says, is because one of his initiatives,Good Life Sacco, may become a bank in two years.

The other reason is, he has been able to convince ardent adherents of his Akorino sect to review their view over wealth accumulation here on earth. “God did not create us to have a bad life, but all these things in the world were created by God to serve us as we serve Him,” he says.

Through the sacco he helped found in 2012 in Thika, he has managed to show that being the sect’s follower does not mean one cannot lead a good life or invest in business. How did he manage to overcome the limiting view of the sect?

Maina says that his late father taught him from a tender age that despite the promises in the Bible, he had to work to better his life here on earth. “During holidays, my late father used to take me through his coffee farm. He always said he wanted me to be an outstanding manager one day,” says the 38-year-old entrepreneur.

The other thing his father emphasised was discipline, perhaps the reason Maina was able to start investing even when he earned Sh12,000 as a lecturer. Maina says his father made sure he understood discipline by buying him biographies of outstanding global entrepreneurs, which he read and kept the lessons at heart.

After completing his education at Giakaibei Secondary School in Mathira Constituency in Nyeri County 16 years ago, Maina jetted out to India through a friend, where he pursued an undergraduate degree in Information Technology at Jabalpur University. In 2003, he returned to Kenya where he landed a job at Institute of Advanced Technology College in Nairobi as a lecturer.

Driven by lessons from his father, Maina says he kept his eye on the ball — success and in 2009 he was promoted to examination manager and his salary increased to Sh50,000. While still working as a lecturer, he saved Sh250,000 which he used to start a potato supplies business between Kinangop and Nairobi.

In 2009, one of his friends who had won a government tender approached him for financial assistance. “I lent him Sh318,000 on condition that he would repay with interest,” he says. Maina says this transaction lit a bulb in his head. “I found out that many Kenyans were struggling to get loans to boost their businesses. The banks were giving them conditions that many could not meet,’’ he says.

In November 2012, Maina recruited a few people and founded Good Life Sacco. They started with Sh60,000 and now the sacco is worth over Sh300,000. Maina prides himself as a shrewd salesman and within a month of opening the sacco, he pitched the idea of starting a school to a few people. They bought the idea and Red Hill Girls Secondary School, Limuru, Kiambu County, was born.

The sacco has now opened over 10 branches in Kenya and has more than 19,000 members. We are growing tremendously because we bridge the gap between the rich and poor,” he says. He hopes the sacco will become a bank by 2017. He has also diversified into other investments and runs Good Life Insurance Agency and Good Life Homes.

The businessman is also trying his hand in real estate and is setting up two mega estates in Nyeri town worth Sh500 million. His empire, he estimates, is also worth Sh500 million. He takes a religious tone when dishing out advice: “You don’t give up based on your background.

Even Jesus Christ was born and placed in a manger, but that did not deter Him from achieving His mission of saving the world. Stay focused, set a goal and come up with something that can transform the society,” says Maina as he drives off.

Akon ordered a bulletproof van for an unnamed African President

Senegalese American artist Akon is preparing a special gift for an unidentified African President.

According to TMZ, last year Akon ordered a van from a company identified as The Auto Firm in South Florida and asked them to reinforce it with bulletproof armor.

Once the company was done reinforcing the 2014 Mercedes Sprinter, it was valued at $350,000 (Ksh32 million)

The order raised eyebrows but Akon would not diverge a thing only saying he is doing if for an African President whom he wouldn’t name.

The good folks at TMZ say their best guess was Senegal’s President but Akon would not confirm.

Kenya’s Nairobi News, a sister publication of the Daily Nation coyly put up a headline “IS AKON BUYING UHURU A SH33.6 MILLION GIFT?” referring to Kenya’s President Uhuru Kenyatta.

The bulletproof 8-seater van is equipped with DirecTV, surround sound among others which are all iPad controlled.

The exterior of the van is very plain probably to avoid a lot of attention for the mystery president.

So the bigger question is…is it President Uhuru’s or President Macky Sal’s?

Tick…tock..tick…tock….

ODM reacts to Ipsos Synovate survey on Presidential candidates

The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has reacted to the recently released opinion poll results which named Uhuru Kenyatta as the most favourite presidential candidate in Kenya today. According to a poll by Ipsos Synovate, if presidential elections were held today, 52% of those who voted in 2013 wouldvote for Uhuru. Raila Odinga would apparently get 29% of the vote whereas DP William Ruto would get votes from 3% of the total voters. The poll also says the other candidates-Kalonzo Musyoka, Musalia Mudavadi, Peter Kenneth and Moses Wetang’ula-would each get one per cent of the presidential votes were Kenya to go to the polls now.

In a press statement signed by Hon. Opiyo Wandayi, MP and Secretary for Political Affairs, ODM termed the opinion poll as “suspect” and “misleading”. According to ODM, it is a practice globally to conduct opinion polls midterm to specifically gauge the job rating of the incumbent and chances of their re-election. ODM however insists that a “popularity contest” should not be carried out at this point in time since it is not clear who the current president’s challengers in the polls will be.

“This latest so-called opinion survey was hurriedly commissioned to divert the public’s attention from a myriad of pressing national problems ranging from run-away insecurity in the country and the entrenched corruption in high places among others,” the pressstatement says in part.

The statement urges ODM members, supporters and the general public to ignore “such diversionary tactics” and continue to press the Jubilee administration to deliver on its election pledges and “wait to show them the RED CARD” if they failed to do so.

Let’s Talk Family: Demystifying Diaspora Marriage Myths

Marriage is the only war where you sleep with the enemy” screamed a car sticker. “Marriage starts when she sinks into his arms and end with her arms in his sink” read another one. Memorable quotes, these ones, if only the grim statistics of marriages on life support or worse could tell a different story. Theories abound as to why thriving happy marriages are such a mirage, especially for many African (read Kenyan) immigrants here in America. I have lost count of the number of young, vivacious and confident adults who tell me “there is nobody to marry in Dallas”- really?

Why has the art of finding a spouse here in Dallas and elsewhere become so elusive? What are these special skills that are needed today to get and keep a husband or a wife in this big city of ours? Well, at the risk of opening a Pandora’s Box, i opine that no special skills are needed, just a change of attitude. I know too that a long happy thriving marriage is also a reasonable expectation and feat easily achieved. Indulge me a little and you will see why and how.

First, marriage really works if both husband and wife commit to make it work. Let’s face it, our grandparents stayed married because they decided to, not because their challenges were less serious. Quitting has become such an easy option in our generation that it is a secret weapon spouses yield against each other whenever problems arise in a marriage. God’s grace is always available, but our pride often gets in the way. In marriage, you don’t have to go halfway, to meet your spouse in the middle-you go all the way! Two people standing on opposite sides will never meet until one or both walk the distance between them. I can recall times (hope my wife is not reading this) when there has been a small disagreement, followed by a few days of silence (silent-treatment the sisters are very good at) and eventually neither of us can really remember why we are not talking to each other! Sometimes we have just looked at each other and busted into laughter. Human pride is so costly. Can you swallow (or better still digest) your pride and save the marriage?

Second, there are many healthy marriages that are working great. Mine is! I think many marriages are bleeding and hurting because of lopsided expectations and goals. Happiness should never be a goal in marriage. I have not seen it anywhere in the Bible. Happiness in marriage is a by-product of a healthy marriage, not a goal. Every healthy marriage becomes a happy one, so don’t shoot for happiness but for health. Formula? Husbands learn to really love and wives learn to really respect, as the Scriptures teach in Ephesians 5:22-25. A man’s greatest need is not love but respect. Sisters, don’t put your men down even if you are earning twice what they earn and brothers love your wives the way they want to be loved.

I want our marriages to thrive, not just survive. We can arrest the negative trends of marriages going south. We can do something. “As iron sharpens iron, so a man sharpens the countenance of his friend” (Proverbs 27:17) A group of friends have decided to come together and form a fellowship with a singular purpose of enriching our marriages here in Dallas through meeting once in three months to encourage one another, pray for our marriages and just share ideas. This group, called DALLAS MEG (Marriage Enrichment Group) is open to any couples wishing to strengthen their marriage. The group is not affiliated to any church or political party. (If interested, You can text 214-690-4545 or write to howtogoforward@yahoo.com)

Let’s thrive. Let’s demystify marriage.

Finally, i want to invite you to come and worship with us every Sunday @ 11:00 am- International Christian Center 2011 West Spring Creek Pkwy, PLANO TX 75023 (suite 650)

[VIDEO] Kenyan joins race for MP seat in Britain

A Kenyan will be in the race for a parliamentary seat in the UK when the Britons go to the polls next month.

Independent candidate Daniel Munyambu is seeking to enter the British House of Commons as the representative for Thurrock constituency.

The constituency is represented by Ms Jackie Doyle-Price of the Conservative Party.

The seat has attracted seven candidates in the elections scheduled for May 7.

The race includes Mr Timür Mark Aker, the current member of the European Parliament for the East of England, Mr Jamie Barnes, who is running on Cannabis is Safer than Alcohol movement, former BBC journalist and Labour Party candidate Polly Billington who claims to be “fed up witnessing injustice and wanted to be the person to get things done”.

Others are Mr Rhodri Iain Jamieson-Ball (Liberal Democrat) and University of Essex lecturer Kristilolu Aba of All People’s Party.

However, Mr Munyambu’s candidature faces challenges. In 2012, when he returned to Kenya, he fled after being granted bail for charges related to defrauding a client in a car import deal.
Yesterday, he told Nation the charges were politically motivated.

“It was a well-planned set up to stop me from climbing the political ladder,” he said.

He therefore has to banish his past record on fraud. He was a Labour Party activist before he was suspended by the party after the fraud charges came to light.

He will also have to win over voters from re-electing Ms Doyle-Price who says on her party website that she is a local girl who was “was raised on a council estate.”

“If you re-elect me, I’ll continue to fight for you, your family and all hardworking people across Thurrock,” Ms Doyle-price says, listing a number of her achievements.

Mr Munyambu, who once harboured presidential ambitions in Kenya, believes he has what it takes to beat his six rivals.

“All voters deserve the right to have a say in the running of the country and opportunity to define their destiny,” he says in his brief manifesto.

Yesterday, he told Nation “politics is my lifetime career” and that his aim is to make a difference in people’s lives wherever he goes.

He, however, still harbours ambitions of becoming president of Kenya.

“I have observed over a long period of time the needs, dreams and aspirations of the Kenyan society are far from being met; that’s the basis of going for the top seat. As everybody can see, Kenya is heading in the wrong direction and new credible leadership is long overdue,” he said.

Mr Munyambu went to the UK in early 2007 to join his wife. In 2011, he was elected councillor in Basildon, garnering 52 per cent of votes cast.

His manifesto says he will tackle issues such as unemployment, better schools, and health and housing problems in his locality, where he says he will help in “mobilising both public and private housing stock.”

“I will lobby the government to fund the development of more affordable housing in the local area. Developers and Thurrock Council should work together to meet and exceed targets for the building of social housing to ensure more residents are able to have their needs met.”

He continues: “I will encourage both public and private employers to increase output, leading to a greater need to employ more staff.”

He also wants to lobby for the UK to bring a referendum on whether it should stay in the EU earlier to 2016.

South Africa’s new black-on-black apartheid: Africa Reacts

The upsurge in xenophobic violence in South Africa that started in the port city of Durban a few weeks ago has angered African countries, many of whose citizens have been targeted.

Foreign-owned shops have also been attacked and looted in Johannesburg, which experienced the worst of similar violence in 2008.

African nations feel particularly affronted by the attacks, given the support the continent gave to South Africa during its long fight against white-minority rule. Here are some reactions:

Zambia: Music blackout and boycott

Zambia’s biggest private radio station Q FM has announced on its Facebook pagethat it has “indefinitely blacked out the playing of South African music in protest against xenophobic attacks on foreign nationals taking place in that country”.

Protesters in Zambia were encouraged to wear black using the hashtag #blackfriday

Earlier, a small group of Zambian protesters went to the South African High Commission in Lusaka to complain about the xenophobia, reports the BBC’s Meluse Kapatamoyo.

Malumbo Siwale in Zambia tweeted using the hashtag #blackfriday, which has been trending on twitter in Zambia: “Not buying or using South African products today, fight #xenophobia by pressuring the #SA govt to act #blackfriday”.

Mozambique: Mine and gas workers evacuated

A road block has been set up near the Ressano Garcia border post with South Africa by a group of people who are stopping vehicles with South African number plates from entering the country and reportedly stoning some of them.

Mozambican workers at mining and gas companies have also protested about the violence, downing tools on Thursday demanding that South African employees leave – and that their jobs should be taken by those fleeing the violence in South Africa, says the BBC’s Jose Tembe.

South Africa’s largest oil producer Sasol is repatriating 340 South Africans from Mozambique

South African petrochemicals firm Sasol and Brazilian mining giant Vale have since evacuated some of its foreign workers.

The government has asked people not to retaliate against South Africans and urged Mozambican not to go to South Africa – some make the trip from the capital, Maputo, to go shopping at the weekend – so the situation does not escalate. An anti-xenophobia march in Maputo is also planned for Saturday.

A Mozambican youth group has posted this suggestion on its Facebook page: “In view of the xenophobic disgrace coming from South Africa, the Youth Parliament advocates that electricity and gas supplies to South Africa be suspended until [South Africa’s President] Jacob Zuma comes to Mozambique to redeem himself.”

Malawi: Goods boycott call

There have been calls for people to stop buying South African goods and services, spearheaded by John Kapito, executive director of the Consumers Association of Malawi (CAMA).

“We’re urging Malawians to boycott all South African shops and goods,” he told the BBC.”We’re giving them one week to close their shops. On Friday next week we will physically close all South African shops like Shoprite and Game, if they don’t close on their own. If they don’t want us in their country, we don’t want their goods here too.”

Billy Mayaya, an activist in the capital, Lilongwe, has said that there are street demonstration planned next Tuesday, where protesters will deliver a petition to the South African High Commission – two days after the government plans to begin the repatriation of some of its citizens from South Africa.

Horror as hoax SMS sent by Garissa attack victim turns ‘prophetic’

A hoax text message sent by one of the Garissa terror attack victims on April Fools’ Day turned out to be prophetic, her sister has said.

Winnie Mandela said she received an SMS from her younger sister Annetor Oliech, a student at Garissa University College, saying the institution had been raided by terrorists.

Winnie said Annetor wrote that attackers had surrounded students and were hurling grenades.

Annetor said she was safe and in class for morning preps.

Winnie was speaking during Annetor’s burial in Lwak village, Rarieda constituency, on Wednesday.

Annetor was killed in the April 2 al Shabaab attack on her university.

Mandela said she ignored her sister’s plea not to share the SMS with anyone and forwarded it to their elder brother.

The next day she woke up to the news of the attack.

“It is as if my sister had a premonition on her death since what was contained in the SMS was a replica of the day’s events,” Mandela said.

Rarieda MP Nicholas Gumbo said he was saddening by the loss of a young life.

Rosemary Odinga on the good, the bad and the slimy of snail farming

Snail meat is tantalising and super nutritious. Before you say “yuck”, read on. Not only is the meat amazingly sweet (it tastes like fried gizzard dipped in butter) it has a high demand from the high-end market that is so huge; farmers who have ventured into it cannot satisfy that market.

Now, before you dash to your farm to collect all those random snails that have been ravaging your crops, find out what it takes to be a successful snail farmer. Smart Harvest caught up with Rosemary Odinga the only one of her kind in Kenya (according to Kenya Wildlife Service, which issues the license).

So how did she slide into this venture?

“I started this project as a hobby in 2007. Before I started, I had gone to Nigeria where I had the privilege of visiting former Nigerian president Olesegun Obasanjo. He is one of the biggest snail farmers there. He is the one who challenged me to think about farming. He was so convincing with the snail farming, I promised to do something when I came back home.” says Rosemary, eldest daughter of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.

When she came back home, she did intense research on the same.

“I visited the University of Nairobi and met one Musombi (now deceased) a snail expert who was passionate about snail farming. I learnt everything from the types of snails, to their behaviours, ideal environment, feeding, breeding, market potential plus more. He saw my passion and volunteered to act as my mentor.” To start off, Musombi donated to Rosemary13 snails, the giant African land snail.

“As expected with new farmers, all the snails died save for two. I think they were exposed to heat, which is a no-no for them. Actually, snails thrive in cool temperatures and wet surfaces. That is why they multiply during the rainy season.”

To avoid such blunders, she constructed a greenhouse in her 25-acre farm in Kiserian and placed the two surviving ones there.

Within three months, they multiplied and were so many, I started donating to my friends who were foreigners. A French restaurant heard about my venture and placed orders. That is how the venture began to thrive,” says the mother of two.

She also brought on board three farmhands to help with the extra workload. Now she has 3,000 snails at various stages of their lives. Her farm Shelltops Ltd, packs the slimy creatures in 160gram bags (contains 24 pieces).

“The orders from high-end hotels became so overwhelming, I could not meet it. Because of the pressure, I decided to just focus on individual clients who comprise expatriates and Kenyans of foreign origin. But I also supply to a few upmarket restaurants,” she says.

Irresistible as snail farming may sound, Rosemary is quick to offer a disclaimer.

“I know this thing may have all dynamics of a quail project — zero capital, zero labour, an ever ready market and profits pap! Far from it. There are several steps a farmer has to go through before they can say be allowed to rear snails,” Rosemary shares.

First, a farmer has to obtain a license from Kenya Wildlife Service because the creatures are categorised as wild. And before KWS issues you with that license, you have to demonstrate that you have the knowledge and capacity to rear them.

“To meet those stringent KWS standards, I used to work closely with the late Musombi. I am also in constant touch with Obasanjo, who is like my mentor. He always calls to check how I am fairing on with the project. When he visits Kenya, he always passes by my farm.”

After passing that test, the next challenge for the farmer is getting a conducive place for the creatures.

There are different ways of rearing snails, the free range system. This is basically placing the snails in a shamba as opposed to a closed structure like a greenhouse.

If one chooses to go the greenhouse system, one has to get containers like basins, which are to be filled with soil and sprinkled with water to keep the soil moist.

“You do not just get ordinary soil. There is a special one that I buy then I ‘enrich’ it. Prior to commencing the project, the environment on which the snails develop remains ideal.”

Rosemary has equipped herself with all info snails, she talks snails like a Maths professor cracking complex algebra formulae.

“Snails are hermaphrodites, meaning they have both male and female sexual organs. There are different types of snails Giant African Land Snail – Achatina fulica, Garden Snail – Helix aspersa and Roman Snail – Helix pomatia. Each category has different species, for instance, under the Giant African Land snail, there is the Achatina Achatina from West Africa, Achatina Marginata from West Africa and Achatina Fulica from East Africa. The species vary in body features like size, the shell and the general structure.

Rosemary specialises in Achatina Fulica from East Africa.

The creatures feed on vitamins so their diet comprise kales, cabbages and fruits like paw paw.

To ensure that the snails thrive and breed well, there are certain aspects that a farmer must get right.

“One is the temperature. Snails thrive in cool moist environs. They hate the sun. The soil type must also be right and contain the nutrients they need. That is why a farmer cannot just scoop soil from his farm, put in a basin and dump thesnails. The soil has to be specially treated,” she explains.

When being packaged for sale, chicken and livestock are slaughtered, so how are snails prepared before they hit the market?

“Some people kill them by placing them in boiled water while others suffocate them. For us, we do not use ‘crude’ methods because our clients are sensitive and they would not eat the meat if they knew that the animal was butchered like that. I will not divulge that secret but let me just say we do it in a “special way’ which adheres to international standards,” she says with a chuckle.

So what would she tell young people who would want to venture into snail farming?

“Snail farming is lucrative, but there are very strict requirement from Kenya Wildlife Service. This is not just something you jump in; you have to read extensively to know snails in and out,” she says.

“Having said that, I would like to encourage them to do their research and embrace unique projects. They should look beyond the obvious.”

Parting shot?

“I believe engaging in farming is a sign of patriotism because one is contributing towards food security. The government should put in place policies that encourage young people to take up farming as an economic activity,” says Rosemary.

US report warned of links between Somali hawala banks and terrorism to Kenya

MOMBASA: A report by the United States’ Bureau for International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs published in March 2015, had indicated that Somalia’s remittance banks, or hawala which were blacklisted by Kenya after the April 2 terrorist carnage in Garissa were financing terrorism activities.

Meanwhile the report by the US Department of State warns that despite Kenya being a member of the Eastern and Southern Africa Anti-Money Laundering Group, it still has deficiencies in controlling the flow of funds adding that Kenya is also not capable of adequately criminalizing terrorist financing.

And the report alleges that the Kenyan authorities are not able to ensure a fully operational and effectively functioning financial intelligence unit in its midst.

Although many of the hawalas that send money to Somalia have branches in Kenya where a large Somalia diaspora lives the report notes that “Somalia does not have a commercial banking sector, and the Central Bank lacks the capacity to supervise or regulate the hawala” and warns that the warton nation does not belong to any of the regional and continental bodies created to combat money laundering.

“Somalia does not have laws or procedures requiring the collection of data for money transfers or suspicious transaction reports. Somalia did not distribute the UN list of terrorists or terrorist entities to financial services. Somalia lacked the funding and capacity to investigate and prosecute incidents of terrorist financing,” says the report.

Even though the report does not mention specific agents which were susceptible to misuse to finance terrorist groups, it expressed concern over the growing number of hawala mostly used by ethnic Somalis in Kenya and East Africa some of which ended in Al Shabaab’s coffers.

The State Bureau for International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs in the 233 page document titled “International Narcotics Control Strategy Report Volume II on Money Laundering and Financial Crimes, observes that Kenya’s proximity to Somalia makes it an obvious and attractive location for the laundering of certain piracy-related proceeds and a financial facilitation hub for al-Shabaab.

The report further states that trade goods are used to provide counter-valuation by regional hawala networks.

Although banks, wire services, and mobile payment and banking systems are available to increasingly large numbers of Kenyans, there are also thriving, informal, and unregulated networks of hawaladars and other remittance systems that facilitate cash based, unreported transfers that the Government of Kenya cannot track, states the report.

It claimed that foreign nationals, and in particular the large ethnic Somali resident and refugee populations, were primarily using hawalas to send and receive remittances internationally.

The document list Kenya among major countries where money laundering has thrived adding that despite efforts by the Kenya Revenue Authority, department of the public prosecution and police to combat the vice, Kenya remains vulnerable to money laundering and financial fraud states the report.

“Kenya is a transit point for international drug traffickers. Trade-based money laundering is a problem in Kenya, though the Kenya Revenue Authority has made recent strides in improving internal monitoring and collection procedures,” states the report.

The report notes that there is a black market for smuggled and grey market goods in Kenya, which serves as a major transit country for Uganda, Somalia, Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi, eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, and South Sudan.

It further states that goods marked for transit to these northern corridor countries are not subject to Kenyan customs duties, but Kenyan authorities acknowledge that many such goods are often sold in Kenya.

The report observes that money laundering and terrorism financing activity in the country occur in both the formal and informal sectors, and derives from both domestic and foreign criminal activity.

Such activities include transnational organized crime, cybercrime, corruption, smuggling, and trade invoice manipulation, illicit trade in drugs and counterfeit goods, trade in illegal timber and charcoal, and wildlife trafficking.

Kenya’s financial sector supports 43 licensed commercial banks, many with branches throughout East Africa; nine deposit taking microfinance institutions in Kenya, with 69 branches; 91 Licensed Forex Bureaus, with Nairobi hosting 75 bureaus and Mombasa nine; and one mortgage Finance company.

Kenya holds more than half of the total bank assets in the region, which has grown to $52 billion in 2013, up from $45.2 billion in 2012 noting that diaspora remittances was growing annually, contributing significantly to the country’s foreign exchange inflows.

Remittances in 2013 totaled $1.3 billion and are already at $1.1 billion through September 2014, with North America providing between 45-50 percent of all remittances, and with Europe and the “rest of the world” each providing approximately 25 percent.

There are approximately 121,000 mobile-money agents in Kenya. Through August 2014, $1.7 billion moved through Kenya’s mobile-money systems.

The report states while mobile payment and banking systems are increasingly important, the tracking and investigation of suspicious transactions remains difficult, although data on these transactions have the potential to facilitate investigations and tracking, especially compared to transactions executed in cash.

The lack of regulation/supervision of this sector, coupled with a lack of reporting from certain reporting entities, contribute to the risks posed by this sector claim the report.

The CBK’s strategy to increase financial integrity through increasing financial inclusion, and its associated regulatory interventions, has led to an increase in formal sector financial inclusion from 41 percent in 2006 to 67 percent in 2013.

To demand bank account records or to seize an account, the police must present evidence linking the deposits to a criminal violation and obtain a court order. The confidentiality of this process is not well maintained, meaning that account holders are often tipped off about such investigations and so are able to move their assets or contest the orders.

“Kenya is overhauling its criminal justice system. The government, and especially the police, must allocate appropriate resources and build sufficient institutional capacity and investigative

Skill to conduct complex financial investigations independently,” says the report.
