A third-year University of Nairobi student has appealed for funds to travel to India for the removal of a recurring brain tumor.
Emmanuel Jadudi has already undergone three procedures to remove a cancerous Grade III Ependymoma.
Jadudi requires Sh1 million by Saturday for the fourth surgery in India scheduled for mid-August.
He said the amount is tentative as a review will be done before the final cost of the procedure is determined.
The political science and sociology student has suffered impaired speech following the diagnosis at the Kenyatta National Hospital in June 2012.
In a phone call with the Star on Tuesday, he asked the media to highlight the challenges of dealing with brain tumors.
Jadudi said the procedures he has undergone so far cost about Sh5 million, the first one at KNH at Sh600,000 and the first trip to India costing Sh3.3 million.
“So many people suffering from the condition [cancerous brain tumors] cannot get the help and support I am getting because of the cost of treating it,” he said.
Jadudi said treating the condition has put a financial strain on his family in Kisumu.
“My family is still in shock, but has been supportive,” he said, adding that the high cost of therapy forced him to relocate to the county where his family is fully taking care of him.
His plight was first highlighted by lifestyle blogger Biko Zulu in a post titled That Thing In Jadudi’s Head.
Biko said Jadudi reached out to him to assist with highlighting the condition through his blog has a large following.
He detailed Jadudi’s struggle and his determination to exploit every option available in getting treatment.
“I asked him what scares him the most and after a long pause, so long I checked my phone to see if the call had dropped, and just when I was thinking that maybe his silence was my answer he said faintly, ‘I’m scared of dying..’,” Biko said in his blog post.
“He said it in a near whisper like he didn’t want death to hear what he said. Then he added, ‘I’m scared of dying not having met my dreams’.”
The Africa Cancer Foundation has opened an account through which donations for Jadudi’s treatment can be made; the M-Pesa pay bill number is 806200 (leave slot for ‘Account Number’ blank).
A social media campaign for the funds drive is running under the hash tag #1MilliForJadudi.
