Machakos governor Alfred Mutua on Friday told off doctors at the level 5 hospital for staging a go-slow over a five day delay of their salaries.
“You can pack your bags and leave this hospital, it is inhuman to let patients suffer because your pay has been delayed for a few days” said Mutua
He added that even himself had not received his salary but was still working as usual as he had a commitment to serve the public just like the doctors and other public servants.
He added that the anomaly was resulted by the delay in passing the supplementary budget and they would soon have their salaries.
The governor was on a tour of the level 5 facility to inspect new medical equipment acquired by the county government when he was informed that the medics were on a go slow.
Mutua said the hospital is set to become a model referral facility following the ongoing renovations and the acquisition of ultra modern equipment.
The hospital which also a referral for Makueni, Kitui and Kajiado now has a dialysis machine, electrosurgical unit, anesthetic machines, operating tables with orthopedic extensions and LED operating lights.
“We have also acquired mammography machines to screen breast cancer, orthopantogram machines for screening jaws, teeth and fractures and an image intensifier machine for real time theater procedures which is the first of it’s kind in east and central Africa.” Mutua said.
He added that the county now has a ten bed dialysis center to provide renal services and an intensive care unit set to be the first in the region and will be operational by month’s end.
Mutua said plans were underway to construct an oncology unit for cancer patients and a private wing as well as a tele-medicine unit where local doctors will consult with experts from all over the world while performing procedures.
The governor added that the county intends to hire 200 nurses, 50 medical officers, 20 consultants, 50 clinical officers, 20 laboratory technicians, 15 radiologists and 5 anesthetists.
Mutua told the medical staff to treat patients humanely and with respect adding that those found mishandling and insulting them will be dealt with accordingly.
