A motion seeking to have internally displaced persons since 1895 compensated was defeated in the Senate. An amendment moved by Henry Ndiema(Trans Nzoia) on a motion seeking to compel the government to profile the IDPs for resettlement fell short of the requisite support of 24 Senators after convincing only18 members. At least 24 Senators must support a motion touching on counties directly to be passed.
Those who opposed the amendment argued the aim of the motion was not to address historical injustices since that was the mandate of the Truth Justice and Reconciliation Commission and the National Land Commission. The mover of the motion Godfrey Kariuki (Laikipia) expressed concern that Senators had turned the motion into a land debate which was not the objective of the motion.
“I did not intend to talk about the land issue. The major problem is leadership, that is why people have been fighting. The duties of the National Land commission is to address land injustices ,” he said. Moses Wetangula (Bungoma) insisted that the IDP issue is linked to land which is considered by many as the most important asset. He, however, opposed the motion saying Kenyans needed to move forward.“If you are a driver and you want to drive forward, you don’t keep looking at the rear mirror,” said Wetangula.-The People
