Sharp Electronics has taken the saying bigger is better to a new level with the launch of the world’s largest TV set in the Kenyan market.

The 90- inch Aquos LED retailing at Sh2.3 million has left rivals Samsung, LG and Panasonic scratching their heads as the race to dominate the high-end market becomes tough.

The Aquos LED TV adds six inches to the largest high definition TV screens sold in Kenya.

It comes as global television manufacturers seek to grow slowing sales by producing premium TVs with bigger screens and sharper images and barely four months since its rival from South Korea LG electronics introduced 84- inch cinema 3D television retailing at Sh1.8 million.

“With thousands of Sharp televisions already sold across the region, we believe the new 90-inch Aquos LED TV completes our product offering in Kenya, now ranging from 60-inch to 90-inch TVs”, said Rakesh Singh, country manager Polestar Kenya.

“What differentiates us from our competitors is our lead and superiority in LED/LCD technology which together with Sharp’s strong brand values help us offer consumers state-of-the-art products priced to meet their aspirations,” said Manu Mahdi, GM — Consumer Electronics at Sharp MEA.

The 90”Aquos LED TV, with its X-Gen Panel Technology has a wider aperture ratio which allows easy light transmission through the panel. This gives a superb image contrast quality, at much lower power consumption.

Sharp uses a method in which UV light controls liquid crystal molecules to ensure uniform alignment. The result is a high precision picture and a deep black and fantastic white at Pico meter level.

Every Aqous smart TV comes with Wi-Fi capabilities. This means that one no longer needs to worry about cables and connections.

A viewer can switch from 3D to 2D anytime you want. Earlier this year, Samsung Electronics released a 75-inch full HD TV at Sh1.06 million while Japan’s Sharp unveiled an 80-inch model retailing at Sh1 million.

The Samsung 3D comes with Smart Interaction, featuring voice, gesture and face-recognition control as well as the Smart Evolution hardware and software upgrade kit.

Sharp currently controls five per cent of this market segment currently dominated by Samsung, LG and Sony but plans to grow it to 20 per cent by 2014.

The television market has been fast evolving with the size and functionality of the devices becoming more advanced.

As the competition for high-definition TVs intensify, it is trickling down to the retailers who have enticing offers to lure buyers.

For instance, in addition to the warranties provided by the manufacturers, retailers like House Wife’s Paradise offer one-year insurance for the electronics.-DAILY NATION
